Different Type of Filters in Tableau

Filters are generally used to restrict the number of records available in data source. In other words Filters are use to create subset of Data. In Tableau there are Filters available at various level for different purposes.

Given below are the Filter types available in Tableau

  • Extract Filters
  • Data Source Filters
  • Context Filters
  • Dimensions Filters
  • Measure Filters

Extract Filters :

When we use extract data instead of Live data from data source then we can apply filters at Extract level.

We already know how to Make a connection to data source and what is the difference between live and Extract data in Tableau. Now we are going to learn Extract filters through simple steps, see below images and description -

1. After Making a Extract Connection Click on Edit button to create a Filter on Extract as shown below-

p

2. Once you click on Edit the following window will open, Click on Add button and then Choose the Field you want to use for Filter and then Click on OK button.

Extract Filters Step 2

3. Once you click on OK the following window will open, now you can apply filter as per your requirement.
We can choose
  • Values from list
  • Use All Values
  • Use Wildcard as a Filter (For Example - City Start with 'A' or City Name Contains 'S')
  • We can use Condition like Choose City based on Sales (For Example - City having sales more than 50,000)
  • We can use Top/Bottom few Cities based on any Measures (For Example - Choose Top 10 cities based on Profit)

Extract Filters Step 3

4. Once you apply filter as per your requirement then Click on Ok you will come back to the following window, now you can add more filters here as per your requirement, and then Click on OK

Extract Filters Step 1

5. After Applying your filter on Extract once you move to your Worksheet for creating Visualization Tableau will automatically ask you to save extract on your Local system this is because we are not using live Connection, we are using Extract to perform our analysis, so it will save Filtered data in your Extract, Save your Extract as shown below in picture and move to worksheet.

Extract Filters step 5

6. Now Only filtered data is available for your visualization, See in below image, as i filtered only 4 Cities in above exercise so only 4 cities data is available for Creating Visualization.

Extract Filters step 6

Data Source Filters:

We already know the Extract Filter, now its time to Learn Data Source Filter, Data Source Filter is used to apply Filter at Data Source Level, It create subset of data present in a data set. This is similar to extract filter but both of them are not Linked to one another.
We can apply Data Source Filter on both Live and Extract Connection.

See Below steps to apply Data Source Filters -

1.  Click on Add button near Filters as shown and highlighted below in image, it will popup a window for Edit Data Source Filter, then Click on Add button to add the filter.

Data Source Filter steps

2. Once you Click on Add button it will open the similar Filter options we did for Extract Filter, you can apply filter as per your requirement.
We can choose
  • Values from list
  • Use All Values
  • Use Wildcard as a Filter
  • We can use Condition like Choose City based on Sales
  • We can use Top/Bottom few Cities based on any Measures
